Amazing Magnetic Art Sculpture
This art piece is by SACHIKO KODAMA and currently on display at the Samuel Freeman Gallery at the Bergamot Station, in Santa Monica, CA. THIS VIDEO IS NOT TIME LAPSE. IT IS ALL FILMED AND PLAYED BACK IN REAL TIME.
In 2000, Sachiko began work on a ferrofluid art project that she named "Protrude Flow". Ferrofluid is a very interesting material originally developed by NASA it has now found itself been used for a whole range of devices including dampers for controlling and stabilizing large building that move around in the wind. Whats also amazing is that they have such lovely visual qualities when magnetized. The term liquid architecture is used a lot in interactive architecture based on the ideas of how architecture becomes animated by adding the 4th Dimension of Time. Sachiko has taken this idea of liquid architecture more literally with these stunning sculptures made from ferrofluid which changes its state by the introduction of electromagnetic waves into the fluid turning it solid. As you stand around and watch this piece, you get literally mesmerized as the ferrofluid (guided by magnets) follows its track and changes its forms.

She Changes
This newly completed sculpture commission by Janet Echelman, changes shape in the wind. 160 feet tall, the sculpture spans 300 feet and suspends over a three-lane highway roundabout on the Atlantic coastline in Porto, Portugal. It is credited as the first permanent monumental sculpture to incorporate fluid movement and is called "one of the truly significant public artworks in recent years" by Sculpture Magazine. The sculpture integrates the history of Porto, where a fishing village became an industrial area with smokestacks and tanks. The red and white stripe pattern of the smoke stack referencing elements continues into the sculptural net shape. The shape of the net mirrors the landscape below. The solid, unmoving forms on the ground accentuate the movement and changing forms in the air.

Extreme ice art: larger than life ice sculptures
This is a collection of ice sculptures from the 2004 World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska and Ice World 2003 in Lübeck, Germany. Ice World had a biblical theme and one of the winning sculptures at the Ice Art Championships just happened to depict an abstract version of Michelangelo's "Creation of Adam," complete with an abstract Gabriel on God's shoulder. Aside from that, all the pictured sculptures have in common is that they go way beyond what you might see on your local Sunday brunch buffet!

How It's Made: Ice Sculptures
Today they will show you how Ice Sculptures are made!
Ice sculpture is a form of sculpture that uses ice as the raw material. Sculptures from ice can be abstract or realistic and can be functional or purely decoration. Ice sculptures are generally associated with special or extravagant events because of their limited lifetime.
The lifetime of a sculpture is determined primarily by the temperature of its environment and thus, a sculpture can last from mere minutes to possibly months. There are several ice festivals held around the world, hosting competitions of ice sculpture carving.
